INU-OH

Set in the 14th century. Traditional musicians have used songs to pass down the tale of the 12th century warfare that divided Japan. Those songs become fated for censorship when the government descending from the victors begins putting their official history in order. Meanwhile, multiple factions compete to establish new forms of dance and music. The blind musician Tomona has a fateful encounter with Inu-oh, who was born with unique physical characteristics into a family of dancers. Together they electrify the populace with their radically new music and dance.

This spectacular animation uses boldly beautiful visuals with a completely original concept to portray the birth of “Noh,” the traditional Japanese performing art. Director Yuasa Masaaki, who conceived of the medieval hero entertainers as rock stars, is himself one of Japan's leading animation directors and an artist with unparalleled imagination. The film has been acclaimed in Europe, including an invitation to the Venice International Film Festival.
