Artist Statement
“You would have to wear a beeper for a day. Every now and then it will beep randomly. Your task would be to pay attention to whatever was going on in your experience and what I call the last undisturbed experience before the beep.”
– an experiment by Dr. Russell T. Hurlburt
What is a stream of consciousness? How do we deal with, and navigate through this seemingly endless stream of thought within us? For over a month, Malaysian theatremakers Arief Hamizan, Bryan Chang, and Tung Jit Yang will undergo an improvisation of Dr. Hurlburt’s experiment on inner experience, manifesting in - “EveryThoughtI’veEverHad”.
Performed live and streamed over 12-hours - “EveryThoughtI’veEverHad” is a performance work that attempts to piece together the never-ending train of thought, a game of catch-and-release with what lies before the footlights of consciousness.
For Kaleidoscope 2022, the work presents with the subtitle “Contemplating the origin of the sun” - where the trio also embark on an exploration into their personal relationships to Japan, locating the intersections of memory and policy.
