Artist Statement

"Aisukurimu アイスクリム" is a video art and performance work that documents in a playful manner, the experience of the artist learning a new language during the course of the pandemic. The artist took up learning Japanese in March 2020 from a Japanese language school in Bangsar which is still ongoing, to which she is now at an intermediate level of speaking.

The piece plays with how the artist explores and adopts to learn Japanese in her best capacity through what's available around her during the circumstances of the pandemic, the struggles and emotions, most prominently the lonely conversations she has with herself and the inanimate objects around her due to being isolated and having the lack of a practising partner. The title Aisukurimu is inspired by the artist’s favourite corner in local japanese konbini.

*Extra note* As someone who is still learning Japanese, the conversation and dialogue may not be as accurate in Japanese grammar standards.
